Watercolor “Equestrian portrait of the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaïevich” in the uniform of an officer of the Hussar regiment of His Imperial Majesty, in a coastered frame. At the center of the composition, the prince himself on a white horse deployed in the front as required by the iconography of the ceremonial portrait. Depth that extends from the bush in the foreground to the golden domes of the church on the horizon. The figure of the rider is replaced by a high culture of writing and the skill of the designer. The reins and the cup of the saddle form a pyramid, the top of which forms a shako. The rise of the saddle and the figure of the horse form a diagonal which is balanced by the vertical adjustment of the figure and the saber pursuing the line of symmetry. Andreev's ribbon, taken from a cross to a cross with a golden lacing of a mentic, is particularly colorful and punctuated by the portrait.
Benckendorff's signature is in the lower right corner.
