Rare ceremonial whistle
USA - Northern Plains
Late 19th century - old French collection
28 cm
Whistle made of bone (probably bird), deer skin, sinew, porcupine quills, metal cones, red dyed down, ermine tails, red pigment.
There are three engravings with red pigment on the bone: a zigzag on top, a bar and a cross. The porcupine quill work surrounds a lace that is black, yellow, white and red.
This whistle, very decorated, is a rare object. These whistles were often used for religious ceremonies.
