USA - Northern Plains - probably Cheyenne (Tsitsistas)
    Late 19th - early 20th century
    41 cm x 5 cm
This male hair ornament was worn on the back of the head, attached to a braid and used as a pendulum for feathers. It is embroidered with geometrical patterns in glass beads. This frequent star pattern is found on Cheyenne objects. The owner's initials "P & P" have been included as a motif. Two laces and the bottom are decorated with dyed porcupine quills (red, natural and purple). The frame is made of deerskin and the bottom of cow rawhide. Metal cones decorate the bottom and the end of the laces. The laces are missing to hold this swing in the hair.
