In Vanuatu, a slit drum is a percussion musical instrument traditionally used for ceremonies, dances and to convey messages. There are large slit drums, which can measure several meters in height and are used for the most important ceremonies, and smaller slit drums, which are more widely used. Almost all Vanuatu cultures have (or have had) their own orchestras of large slit drums, which can be horizontal or vertical. The drums of the Ambrymet islands of Malekula[1], vertical and surmounted by one or more sculpted heads, are iconic Vanuatu objects.
