Hemp or tobacco mortar representing a standing character with his legs slightly bent. The arms are folded upwards and the delicate hands are resting on the cheeks. The face is scarified and is surmounted by a container decorated with geometric patterns serving as mortar.
The sculpture is fine and the general appearance is very balanced.
First part of the 20th century.
Wood with beautiful brown patina of use.

Provenance: Former private Belgian collection, acquired from the descendants of André Van Noten, a former entrepreneur who lived in the Belgian Congo between 1930 and 1960 and who collected mortars and snuffboxes from Central Africa.
