    For info :
The order of Saint Lazarus has its origin in the leper colony installed outside the walls of Jerusalem near the Saint Stephen's gate.
In 1090, the monks of this leprosarium constituted themselves into an order under the direction of Blessed Gerard, from the lineage of the Counts of Dabo-Eguisheim. Members of other orders of chivalry, if struck by leprosy, were treated by their fellow monks of Saint Lazarus who integrated them into their ranks.
Over the centuries, the Order had the Kings of France as its protectors since Louis VII who gave it, in 1154, the castle of Boigny which served as its Magistral Headquarters until the Revolution. The kings of France were generous with the Order, Saint Louis giving it the port of Aigues-Mortes, for its vessels in the Mediterranean to fight the barbarians and Louis XIV that of Saint-Malo for the Ponant fleet intended for the racing war. In return, the Order was entrusted with the organization of the Navy, the Military School and the administration of the hospitals and "Maisons-Dieu" of the kingdom by Louis XIV, who particularly cherished it as "the oldest hospital order in Christendom".
Many personalities were among its members: princes of the blood, Doctor Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Henri Bordeaux of the French Academy, as well as Tsars Paul I of Russia and Alexander I...
Currently, the Order has more than five thousand members in more than forty countries. Its Grand Master is H.E. Don Francisco de Borbon Graf von Hardenberg, who ensures that the Order remains faithful to its traditions: chivalric spirit, Christian unity and hospitable actions.
