Temple fragment
Sienna marble and patinated bronze
Dimensions : H. 26 ; C. 17 (cm.)
Italy (?), circa 1830
An astonishing piece, probably from a table centrepiece. Fragment of a miniature Doric temple. It rests on a triple terrace. The smooth-stemmed columns support the patinated bronze entablature.
The fashion for miniature antique-style architectural highlights
The genesis of this fashion is probably due to the success of the incredible centerpiece known as the "Bailli de Breteuil", executed around 1765-70, embellished and enlarged with several elements following its sale to Catherine of Russia in 1777. It included a representation of the vestibule of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina; the Arch of Titus; and a reduction of the Fountain of the Villa Albani!
More humbly, our piece above all, which can be dated to circa 1830, illustrates this taste of the enlightened amateur, who blends a dreamed-of antique with the imperatives of everyday life.
Condition report: minor damage to the bronze.
