FernandFau,(1858-1925)
was a French painter, illustrator and caricaturist who worked for many of the major caricature journals of his time, such as Le Rire. He signed his works under the pseudonyms of FôouPhô
During his career, he collaborated on the sets of one of the largest Parisian cabarets, the Chat Noir, where he created the shadow play for Jules Jouy's Une Affaire d'honneur, and in 1890, composed Idylle, a one-act revue written with Charles de Sivry.
Our pastel is a very typical representation of a part of his production. Fernand Fau, likes to paint naked women and also water and its reflections.
This charming pastel is very much influenced by Japanese art, as the opening of Japan to the outside world allowed Westerners to bring back many pieces that seduced and inspired artists.
The tree drawn by Fau, the winding of its branches, their reflections in the water find their source in the Japanese print.
