The subject of this watercolor is charming. A hunter rests at the edge of the woods, while his hunting dog, a Breton spaniel, stands guard over the game!
This work was exhibited by the artist at the 1839 Paris Salon under the title "Paysage et nature morte".
It is signed "A. Guill." which is certainly an abbreviation for A. Guillaume. Indeed, Emile Bellier de La Chavignerie's Dictionnaire général des artistes de l'Ecole française lists an "A. Guillaume" living at the same address as the painter "A. Guill. who exhibited at 358 rue Saint-Honoré in Paris in 1839. The former also produced and exhibited drawing portraits at the Paris Salon in 1835 and 1837.
