Jacques-Antoine Vallin was a painter of the school of the Royal Academy of Painting from the late 18th century. Following a career in the Salons from 1791, he found success in the representation of nymphs and bacchantes, drawn from his knowledge of Greek mythology and ancient history.
The women he paints are very often illuminated with a divine golden light. This pair of panels is characteristic of his life's work, through the use of his light colored palette and the deity of these female figures.
