BIOGRAPHY :
Juan de Yepes Álvarez, John of the Cross in religion (Spanish: Juan de la Cruz), born in Fontiveros on June 24, 1542 and died in the convent of Úbeda on December 14, 1591, was a Spanish mystic saint, often called the "Saint of Carmel".
Born into an aristocratic Spanish family, he became a Carmelite after completing his studies, while devoting himself to the Carthusian order. Teresa of Avila, reformer of the Carmelite order, asked him to take charge of the male Carmelite order. He accepted and founded the Order of Discalced Carmelites. He provided spiritual guidance to the Carmelite sisters, before being locked up by the Order's authorities, who refused to accept his reform. John of the Cross underwent the famous mystical experience of La Nuit obscure" (Noche oscura), which he described and developed throughout his life in treatises such as La Montée du Carmel (Subida del Monte Carmelo), La Nuit obscure (Noche oscura), La Vive Flamme d'amour (Llama de amor viva), and Le Cantique spirituel (Cántico espiritual). In them, he seeks to bear witness to the journey of souls towards God. After being appointed prior of several convents of Discalced Carmelites, he was eventually ostracized from his community before his death in December 1591.
After his death, he was quickly recognized as a saint and one of Spain's greatest mystics, on a par with Teresa of Avila. The Catholic Church beatified him in 1675, then canonized him in 1726. His feast day is December 14. Disputes over illuminism led to his writings being called into question, but the famous French Carmelite Thérèse de Lisieux did much to promote the importance of his doctrine. Between the two world wars, he was proclaimed "Doctor of the Church" on August 24, 1926.
He is recognized as one of the greatest poets of the Spanish Golden Age. Since 1952, he has been the patron saint of Spanish poets. Some philosophers have drawn on his writings to conceptualize detachment.
