Bronze Diane de Gabies with brown patina on marble base signed on the terrace Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892).
Barbedienne is known for his eponymous foundry founded in 1838 with Achille Colas (1795-1859), inventor of the process of mechanical reduction of sculptures, whose stamp is also present.
This print is a reproduction of an ancient work by the sculptor Praxiteles (-395 BC). It represents Diana of Gabies, usually identified as Artemis, virgin goddess of hunting and wilderness. With her right hand, this draped young woman, standing next to a trunk, is about to staple, with a fibula, the other side of her chiton. Her wavy hair is held in a bun.
She rests on a tiered and molded pedestal in black marble.
Although it has often been copied, the original work is faithfully reproduced here. This bronze will undoubtedly please art lovers and collectors.
