Yena" cult figure collected in the Upper Sepik region of Papua New Guinea by the Nokuma. The Yena figures are linked to the cult of the yam. They are placed above a large pile of tubers during the first ceremony (there are 3 in all) organized at the time of the harvest, and whose purpose is to thank the ancestors for this sacred gift and to ensure a good harvest the following year. The Yena figures symbolize the planting period and evoke the digging stick used during the transplanting of the yam plant into the ground. Wood. Figure mounted on a base. Traces of use and missing parts.
