Very nice patina of use for this basketry helmet mask called Baba Tagwa collected in the village of Maprik in Papua New Guinea. The Baba mask is worn with a long skirt of pandanus leaves and a necklace of colored fruits. The baba is part of the spirit world and is used to frighten and keep the uninitiated away from the preparations for initiation ceremonies. The baba always carries 1 or 2 long spears which he uses (symbolically) to enforce the laws that govern the uninitiated. Basketry made of rushes and natural pigments. Sold with a presentation base. Free shipping.
