Very beautiful and large sculpture in wood very eroded by its seniority, height 164cm plus base
Female figure carved at the top of the post. Faceted face close to cubism, the closed eyelids, the sculpture of the legs on either side of the trunk creating the effect that the character is as if strewn on the top of the pole
The Botchio is carved from the branch of a tree called roco or loco. According to a legend, it was through this tree that the first man and the first woman descended to earth. Another legend has it that a deified ancestor turned into a tree, the residence of the spirits.
the modernity and stylistic audacity of this sculpture is remarkable
Prestigious provenance from the Anne and Jacques KERCHACHE collection
This sculpture was exhibited at Espace Rebeyrolle in 1996 during the exhibition "Botchio Sculptures Fon, Benin" and is reproduced in the catalog (delivered with)
