-Column in painted wood imitating Egyptian red porphyry, the cylindrical shaft is adorned at the base with a torus of sclupté and gilded laurel leaves and a fine molding at the top. It stands on a square base.

-Prized since antiquity for its color and hardness, porphyry has always been associated with power. The rediscovery of Antiquity during the Renaissance brought back the royal symbolism associated with porphyry, making it highly desirable to the nobility and aristocracy to complete their collections.

    - Inspired by the Neoclassical period, this column is part of the return to antiquity initiated by the resumption of archaeological excavations at Herculaneum in 1738 and Pompeii in 1748.

-The wood painting achieves the desired effect, in a beautiful imitation of red Egyptian porphyry.

-Presented in good condition, please note: the pictorial layer is slightly missing. Early 20th century.
