Exceptional Mazarin desk in burr walnut with maple inlays, with fillets forming poly-lobed frames adorning the front, sides and top. The inner band of the top features a large central drawer, beneath which is a small door, all framed by three lateral and smaller drawers. The undulating front is divided into three bands framed at the corners by inlaid wood leaf scrolls. Eight threaded wooden obelisk legs are linked by crossbeams. The entire structure is inlaid with floral motifs in maple wood.
History: after the glorious Italian campaigns and many other victories, Napoleon I rewarded his exploits and loyalty by appointing Cavalry General Mura King of Naples. This important figure and his court had a number of French pieces of furniture made in Italy. This Mazarin is a flamboyant example of early 19th-century furniture, a happy blend.
