The barbotine is a typically French name, In other countries, we speak of majolica - it is a paste diluted with sand, clay and marl that earthenware makers use by pouring into a mold and which is then covered with varnish. .
These objects, rich in color and very popular between 1890 and 1940, are essentially vases, piggy banks, cache-pots and pitchers that were used daily, first in the North and East of France as well as in Belgium, then everywhere including in the United States where they are now highly sought after.
Maryse Bottero in her book: "Slip Pitchers - Characters, Animals, Flowers"
Éditions Massin, shows us the extraordinary diversity of production in French earthenware factories, from the middle of the 19th century until the 1940s, and also highlights small, almost unknown factories which have as much merit as the "big ones", in the quality, creativity and dissemination of their product.
