Pair of Louis XVI style sconces with the terms of Bacchus as a child
Nice pair of bronze wall lights with double patina, Louis XVI style, they are inspired by the works of Jean Louis Prieur, of which some models made in the 18th century around the 1780s are attributed to Pierre Gouthière, (Christie's sale of 19 November 2020, lot 30).
Made in a neoclassical style, they find their sources of ornamentation in Greek and Roman antiquity, they offer an architecture centered on terms to children topped with vine leaves and grapes recalling the god Bacchus, they maintain at arm's length the 2 arms of light, the busts of children are connected to the sheath by a drapery, the pilasters of the terms have a striated bottom and spokes of the heart and are finished with acanthus leaves and bud.
The arms of light support cups with water leaves and channels receiving vases with gadrooned belly.
