Description :
Green glazed terra cotta, oak.
These very rare glazed earthenware were probably sealed on each side of the hearth of a fireplace, one will often notice small niches in the walls of the hearths to preserve a dry place, one put the stone lighter there for example.
Small niches also existed in the alcoves.
In this case, the quality and refinement are remarkable, with a molded and very slightly arched front frame, it is decorated with an openwork pediment topped with a Marquis crown, a lion's head and scrolls like those of heraldic helmets emerge from the crown.
These niches are made in two parts, a closed cylinder was made on the lathe, cut longitudinally before firing and glued to the back of the frame made by stamping. The interior of the niche is rounded.
In the 18th or 19th century an oak box was made to "hide" the unglazed parts which were glued with mortar, their extreme quality and rarity having incited a collector to preserve them. The beautiful green glaze is typical of the period (utilitarian pottery, green color on figulines).
