Claude VIGNON (After)
Tours, 1593 - Paris, 1670
Oil on canvas
60 x 45 cm (80 x 65 cm with the frame)
In the 17th century, Claude Vignon painted a series of four pictures representing the four great doctors of the Latin church, Saint Jerome, Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine and Saint Gregory.
This is an early copy, probably from the eighteenth century, of the Saint Gregory, whose location is unknown today. A copy of the series of the four Doctors can be seen for example in the church of Saint André d'Apchon (Cantal).
Claude Vignon was successful in regularly painting figures of Catholic saints for various congregations in a manner entirely in the spirit of the counter-reformation. These figures are indeed not only represented in portrait and thus closer to the faithful but also in a very realistic invoice thanks to a rendering, of the carnations in particular, inspired at the same time by Rembrandt and the French Caravaggio.
