Particularly celebrated in Alsace and Lorraine on December 6, Saint-Nicolas is often considered as an equivalent of Santa Claus, a gentle character and protector of children, and for good reason! His legend says that he brought back to life three little children who were killed and transformed into a little salted food by a butcher! This unpleasant gastronomic experience made him the patron saint of children and schoolchildren who, in the 19th century - when our sculpture was created - probably relied on him to grow up without too many problems.

This sculpture has a few missing pieces, but it is easy to see the blessing gesture of Saint Nicholas, wearing the bishop's mitre. At his feet, the three little resurrected children remain under the protection of the holy man.
