Biography:
Mathieu BAUVE or DEBAUVE ( died circa 1786 ).
Chair joiner. Mastered August 1, 1754.
Mathieu Bauve received his master's degree in 1754 and set up shop on rue de Cléry under the "Saint Esprit" sign. He had many disputes with his fellow craftsmen, and acquired a reputation for "despising and insulting all his neighbors". He mainly produced imposing Louis XV chairs, whose perfect execution sometimes contrasted with the beauty of their lines.
His Louis XVI models are, on the whole, of more limited value. The large ceremonial armchairs and "fauteuils à la Reine" were richly carved with flowers and had bold, unusual shapes. In 1786, after his death, his widow succeeded him for one or two years.
