    Pocket watch from the prestigious manufacture IWC, circa 1928.

    In 1868, Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Co. in Schaffausen.
    His plan was to combine cutting-edge American manufacturing technologies with the craftsmanship for which Swiss watchmakers were famous. In Schaffhausen, he found ideal conditions: modern factories, a hydroelectric power station pushed by the Rhine to operate the machines and, just as importantly, a centuries-old watchmaking tradition.
    After a financial crisis, the company was taken over in 1880 by Johann Rauschenbach-Vogel, a mechanical industrialist from Schaffhausen, and transformed into an entirely Swiss company.
    From that moment on, the business remained in the family for four generations...

    Internal brand "Probus Scafusia".
    With the "Probus Scafusia" seal, the Swiss brand's uncompromising pursuit of precision and reliability received an official definition in 1903.
    The Latin motto, which can be translated as "Quality made in Schaffhausen", was invented by the director of IWC at the time, Johannes Rauschenbach-Schenk.
