Bankoni statuette Mali 13th-15th century
Red ochre terracotta
The statuette depicts a seated female figure, her legs depicted in rounded volumes, the thickness suggesting the idea of kneeling. The spindly arms, detached from the body, extend into two schematically digitized hands adorned with imposing rings.
The round, flattened head is framed by half-moon-shaped ears.
She seems to be projecting her gaze skyward.
The lower part of the body is decorated with a refined garment and bracelets on the wrists and neck.
