STRIGILE
Italy, Roman period
Bronze
Length: 26.5 cm
(old accident)
A bronze instrument comprising a capulus handle, a clausula grip and a curved ligula blade with a tubulatio channel.
The strigile was used to scrape impurities from the skin. It was used by Etruscan athletes after combat to remove the oil from the epidermis, which reduced their opponents' grip. Later, the Romans used it in thermal baths and bathhouses.
Old collector's label bearing the handwritten number 4036.
Three punches on the capulus.
The strigile motif adorns many Roman sarcophagus facades.
