A large tribulum composed of over 4,000 flint points.
The tribulum is an agricultural tool used since the third millennium BC. It is one of the oldest agricultural tools and was well known in Roman times. Particularly characteristic of the Mediterranean basin, this machine tool is used to separate grain from stalks.
The underside of our tribulum is encrusted with around 4,000 flint chips, the rarest of which are those containing more than 3,000 stones, as indicated on the Musees d'Occitanie website. This side was in contact with cereals. The tribulum was pulled by donkeys, horses or oxen by means of the ring we see on the rear face. The farmer remained standing on this "sledge" during the operation, to add weight.
