A remarkable maritime diorama depicting a large sailing ship under full sail, presented in its original painted wooden display case.

Entirely handcrafted, this model is distinguished by its wealth of detail: a slender wooden hull, numerous masts and spars, cut and painted sails, red wire rigging, ropes, flags, and small decorative elements arranged along the hull.
The ship stands out against a background painted in various shades of blue and white, evoking a calm sea under a bright sky. The three-dimensional construction, reminiscent of a miniature theater, creates a beautiful sense of depth and gives the impression that the sailing ship is truly moving through the landscape.
The wooden case retains its original paint and a very expressive patina: wear, cracks, small chips, and traces of time all contribute to the charm of this piece of folk art. According to family tradition, this diorama was made in the United States and then given to French friends in the mid-20th century. This American provenance, passed down orally, is not supported by any documentation and should therefore be considered with caution. Likely dating from the 1950s or 1960s, this piece lies at the crossroads of naval modeling, maritime folk art, and Mid-Century decoration. It can also be compared to American "ship shadow boxes," handcrafted compositions depicting ships in glass cases.
With its generous dimensions and soft colors, this diorama would make a unique decorative statement in a seaside home, office, library, restaurant, hotel, or within a collection dedicated to antique maritime history.

A piece full of poetry, in which time seems to have suspended the ship's voyage.

Period: Mid-20th century, probably circa 1950-1960.

Presumed origin: United States, according to an undocumented family provenance.

Materials: Painted wood, wire, cut elements, and glass.

    Dimensions:
    – Width: 64 cm
    – Height: 48.5 cm
    – Maximum depth: 13 cm
    – Depth of the case: Approximately 10 cm
    Condition:
Good overall condition considering the age and handcrafted nature of the object. Antique patina, paint wear, cracks, small chips, and irregularities are visible on the case and interior decoration. These marks attest to its age and contribute to its authentic aesthetic. The photographs are an integral part of the description. Particular care and reinforcement will be taken in the packaging for shipping due to the presence of glass.
