This superb chatelaine is made of pompon leather and is adorned with overlapping, openwork plaques representing suns. The first, larger plaque is adorned in the center of this sun with a trophy surmounted by two hearts and a dove holding a crown in its beak. Its very rich decoration is finely chiseled, each chain attached to the main element ending in a small carabiner. The chatelaine, heir to the clavandier, became in the 18th century what we would call today a fashion accessory, becoming a piece of jewelry and worn on the belt. It can be made of pompon leather, silver, or gold, adorned with stones, miniatures, enamel, or porcelain plaques. It was used to carry various small instruments, scissors, a thimble, a salt flask, a seal, a key, and almost always a watch. In good overall condition, this chatelaine has retained its beautiful gilding.
Mid-18th century period. Height 13.5 cm, width 5 cm.
