This piece is a songbird cage, a musical automaton of German origin, made around the 1950s–1960s in a style similar to the works of the famous Karl Griesbaum factory.
The cage houses two automaton birds, one red and one yellow, covered in colorful feathers. They are perched amid a setting of synthetic branches and foliage, accented by a small decorative mushroom in the center
The rounded dome and twisted bars are made of gilded metal. The cylindrical base is made of repoussé brass, adorned with a continuous frieze featuring floral motifs and foliage in relief in a classical style. Beneath the base are a winding key and a control for starting, pausing, or stopping the mechanism.
The heads and tails move, and the beaks open to sing.
