Bronze with brown patina and gold highlights
26.8 cm
Alteration of the metal
Private collection

Japanese circular bronze dish with engraved decoration of a bucolic landscape in which three ahrats (saints of the Buddhist pantheon) are moving in relief and partially gilded (taka zogan technique). At the top of the scene, the first arhat is moving in a cloudy register, cloak in the wind and wearing a large headdress, both hands holding his pilgrim's staff (shakujô). At the bottom of the scene, two other arhats are shown seated and dressed in a broad cloth. The one on the right is sheltered under a flowering tree and holding an alms bowl with a fountain of water in his right hand at face level. The other is looking at his fellow arhats with his palms turned towards the sky.
Signed Yamamoto Sei.
Note the great finesse of the details brought to the elements in relief.
