This exceptional late 18th-century pen holder is made of yellow and green gold and midnight blue lacquer; at each end, a small gold cap—chiseled with a frieze of leaves and a braid—holds a feather on one side and a small pencil on the other. The central section, which is midnight blue or perhaps black, is studded with stars. In excellent condition, this object has retained its shagreen case. It bears 18th-century hallmarks that we have been unable to decipher. A very similar example, though without its case, is held at the Louvre Museum in the Department of Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern Art under inventory number OA 2372. One small star is missing; the case measures 13.8 cm, and the closed pen holder measures 13.2 cm. The gross weight of the pen holder is 25.90 gr.
