- 20th-century Narwhal rose, country of origin: Greenland

This rostrum comes from a Narwhal, a cetacean living in the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean that is rarely seen and known scientifically as "Monodon monoceros". The male of this species has a single tusk, a modified upper left incisor tooth. This helical tusk describes a left-turning spiral that can reach up to seven meters in length. This long, twisted tusk has been the stuff of legend for centuries, and became a staple of curiosity cabinets during the Renaissance. Nicknamed the "unicorn of the seas", the Narwhal was seen as an animal endowed with magical powers, and many virtues were attributed to its tusk.
