ALAMANACH ROYAL AUX ARMOIRIES DU MARQUIS CHARLES FRANCOIS FONTAINE DE BIRÉ CONSEILLER DU ROI ET TRESORIER GÉNÉRAL DES GUERRES. YEAR 1792 The Almanach royal is a directory of the French administration, founded in 1683 by the bookseller Laurent d'Houry, published under this title from 1700 to 1792, then under different titles (Annuaire impérial, etc.) from 1793 to 1919.

Frontispiece of the Almanach royal, 1735

Each year, in the official order of precedence, it listed the members of the royal family of France, the princes of the blood, and the principal bodies of the kingdom: great officers of the Crown, members of the high clergy, abbots of the great abbeys (with the income of each abbey), marshals of France, colonels and general officers, ambassadors and consuls of France, presidents of the principal jurisdictions, councillors of State, bankers, and so on.
Despite its unattractive nature as a series of nominative lists, it enjoyed wide circulation among a readership composed mainly of financiers, politicians and anyone with an interest in the administrative organization of France.
Although it was published on the initiative of a private publisher, inclusion in the Almanach royal lists was official, and any abuse was punished. A Poitevin, Pierre Joly, was interned in the Bastille at the end of the eighteenth century for having usurped the profession of banker by being listed as such in the Almanach royal [Biblio 1].
His regular edition was in-8o format, with a publisher's leather binding decorated with a gold fleur-de-lys border. 13x21x5cm. 680 pages
