Yela mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo, very distinctive Yela design with large vertical stripes carved in black and white and polychrome, minimalist and abstract mask as is often the case with them. Light wood in fairly good condition, with wear, dents and small cracks due to use and the obvious age of the mask, early last century or late 19th century.
Very fine patina with some parts worn and others with greasy, lumpy deposits, height 26 cm .
These masks were discovered in the 1970s; before then, it was thought that the Yelas didn't have any, as they were secretly kept in the forest.
Provenance: Belgian gallery of historian Richard Dams.
