    Couple of African Mpundu dolls (twins) from the Tabwa ethnic group.
    This type of doll was intended for the cult of twins, similar to the Yoruba, whose artistic corpus includes Ibeji figurines featuring twins.
    These two cylindrical-bodied statuettes are topped by a characteristic head, with small circular mother-of-pearl buttons over the eyes, and realistic hairstyles. Their bodies feature numerous finely sculpted scarifications that illustrate those worn by members of the ethnic group.
    For the Tabwa, as for many other peoples, twins are special beings sent to earth to ensure peace between living beings and nature. When a twin dies during childhood, he or she is represented by a wooden statuette like this one.
