Statue featuring a male bust. The arms are detached from the trunk and the hands are placed on the hips. The neck is broad and powerful, supporting a head with an interiorized expression. The mouth, projected slightly forward, sketches a slight smile. A long nose extending from the forehead structures the face. It is framed by two large, almond-shaped eyes. The slits in the eyes are highlighted by small copper nails, reinforcing the work's protective and symbolic dimension. The cylindrical headdress is developed at the back by a quadrangular volume typical of Kusu production.
This statue, known as "Kakudji", still has its top receptacle, designed to hold magic-ritual substances of the nkisi type. There are also textile elements made of plant fibers and leather around the base of the bust.
These statues were used for divination and protection. Two small holes have been made at the ends of the eyes.
This sculpture is a fine example of Hemba work with a strong Kusu influence.
