Large Bakongo nail fetish, well-mounted, total height 60 cm, quite heavy given the large amount of metal on it. It is bristling with numerous and various nails, screws, knives, awls, files, tools, pitons, forged nails....
Contrary to popular belief, these fetishes are actually positive; they help villagers. They certainly have a somewhat frightening appearance, but it's to scare away evil spirits.
The principle is simple: a person has a request concerning their health, their wealth, their search for love... they go to the shaman with a point, the shaman, in a trance, licks it, and plants it in the fetish to confirm the request, possibly with a sacrifice. These fetishes are still active in certain regions, this one must date from the 1950s, from a Parisian collection, they have become very rare on the market given the craze of the younger generations for these very decorative objects.
