Fang statue from Gabon; this is a Byeri, one of the guardians of Fang reliquaries. It is in the style known as n'tumu, recognizable by its long, cylindrical torso, pouty duck-bill mouth, short, muscular, and stocky arms and legs, with thighs featuring geometric facets, and a beautiful mirror-like patina resulting from regular rubbing with palm oil. Height: 56 cm; in good overall condition, with a few signs of impact and wear... Note the notch at the rear foot, which was used to keep the statue securely anchored to the reliquary basket.
