Antique Baule short sword with antelope skin scabbard.
Superb short sword with leafy blade oxidized by use and age and wooden handle presenting 3 circular zones, decorated with brass nails and on the back the wood of the handle is engraved with a geometrical frieze.very good condition, late 19th - early 20th century (height: 39 cm width: 9.5 cm)
These short swords had to undergo a sacrificial consecration on the blacksmith's anvil, in the presence of the weapon's requester.
This custom, to increase their effectiveness, clearly demonstrates that the blacksmith had to possess knowledge other than his own trade; he was often a soothsayer and sculptor as well.
