    Kilonda ceremonial or ceremonial axe
Songye culture, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
    Wood, iron, and copper
    H. 40 cm; W. 33 cm

The triangular blade is made of openwork iron, decorated on both sides with twenty-two incised anthropomorphic faces and knots with twisted strands. It is held in a straight wooden handle wrapped with nailed copper inserts.

The forging of the blade distinguishes it from battle axes and makes this weapon a prestigious object that can sometimes be considered a form of currency.
