Unfinished pair of SNOWGLASSES
Punuk (?) culture, Alaska ca. 800 - 1400 A.D.
Fossilized marine ivory
Length : 14,5 cm
An astonishing pair of goggles where neither the slits for the eyes nor the lateral perforations have been made. The inside of the eye sockets had begun to be hollowed out, as well as the notch for the nose.
These glasses, characteristic of the Great North, were used to reduce the intensity of the sun's rays and to preserve the retina from the glare and the reverberations on the snow and the ice.
