An ancient mask depicting a spiritual ancestor. Likely similar to a gable mask, this sculpture was hung above one of the openings of the men’s house. These masks are meant to protect the tribe from illness, bad luck, and other misfortunes. Collected in the Blackwater region, Sepik Valley, Papua New Guinea. Wood (treated).
