Imposing baining mask called "kavat" in the vernacular collected in the village of Keravat on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Large three-dimensional mask. Danced during an initiation ceremony for the Bainnig ethnic group in northern New Britain. This traditional dance takes place around a huge fire rich in embers. Wood, paper mulberry bark called tapa, stretched over a wicker frame, leaves, recycled elastic, natural pigments and felt-tip pens. Field photo by Serge GUIRAUD.
