Painted bark collected in the Washkuk Mountains region of Papua New Guinea. Kwoma ethnic group. These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the inside of roofs as well as the pediments of ceremonial houses, and depict in abstract or figurative form the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Assembled together, they line the ceilings and pediments of these large, prestigious huts. New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has a complete reconstruction of a hut roof decorated with painted bark of this type in its permanent collection... Piece of sago bark and natural pigments. Traces of use. Base available on request. Photos by David & Amélie GODREUIL. Approx. 105 x 43 cm / 230€ shipping included.
