These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the inside of roofs as well as the pediments of ceremonial houses, and represent the ancestors or beliefs of the clans, either abstractly or figuratively. Assembled together, they line the ceilings of these large, prestigious huts. New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection includes a complete reconstruction of a hut roof decorated with painted bark of this type... Pieces of sago bark and natural pigments.
