Small "Yena" cult figure collected in the Upper Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Kwoma ethnic group. Yena figures are linked to the cult of yams. They are placed above a large pile of tubers during the first ceremony (there are 3 in all) organized at harvest time, to thank the ancestors for this sacred gift and ensure a good harvest the following year. The Yena figures symbolize the tuber and evoke the digging stick used to transplant the yam plant into the ground. A bird is sculpted under the mouth. Wood and natural pigments. Sold with a base. Traces of use. Free shipping.
