    Black Forest* carved wood cigar box or humidor, decorated with a bird (partridge type) on the lid, standing on a wall decorated with ivy leaves, interior space for 50 cigars, 19th century.
    The box is in good condition.

    Black Forest woodcarvings are not native to Germany, but were made in the Brienz region of Switzerland. Woodworking is an ancestral tradition in this region, and the local people perpetuate the practice of carving wood on house facades, furniture and everyday objects. Sculptors excel in depicting wild animals in their natural environment. In the 19th century, these naturalistic sculptures of the Black Forest became very fashionable and highly prized.
