A rare traditional Chinese three-tiered box, used for weddings or as an offering box. Made of black lacquered wood, it is richly decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays depicting scenes of life, symbolic animals (deer, birds, cranes), flowers and calligraphic characters.
The set comprises three stackable compartments, a compartmentalized inner tray and a lid topped by a carved arched handle. The interior is entirely red lacquered. This type of object combines ritual function with high decorative quality, in the tradition of South Chinese art.
