In the 19th century, Lyon was a hotbed of initiative and creativity. Confectioners played an essential role in the city, producing candies, sweets and sweetmeats. Sugar, once an exotic and precious commodity, became popular thanks to the exploitation of sugar beet. Confectionery stores, considered luxury goods, were located in areas frequented by the wealthy, such as Place de La Comédie.
Made of blackened pearwood, it features brass fillet inlays and a central porcelain cartouche with a floral motif, as Lyon was France's leading horticultural center in the 19th century.
The box stands on four bronze feet and the original key works perfectly.
